Piglia defends a fiction critical of the dominant forms of criticism. He shows the tensions that traverse the work of Borges, whose relationship with the nineteenth century we present through his mentions of Juan Crisóstomo Lafinur. Piglia poses another, relationship with the nineteenth century, which can be followed in his novel Respiración Artificial. We present the criticisms of this novel made by Sarlo, Aira and Halperín in order to conclude with some references to Sarmiento in that novel that can be read with a certain ambivalence, and thus open a of the fiction as a critique of historical discourse.
