Study of Carcass Parameters of Brahma, Cochin and Orpington Chicken Breeds

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to examine the influence of different heavy chicken breeds on carcass characteristics after reproductive period. The Brahma, Cochin and Orpington cocks and hens were feeding ad libitum with commercial layer diet. At the end of reproduction period, the randomly sampled cocks and hens were slaughtered for examination of major carcass parts (breast, things, wings and back), edible giblets and abdominal fat. The results obtained were used to calculate carcass yield and the percentage of carcass components. Differences in the percentage of wings, back, abdominal fat and edible giblets among cocks of tested heavy breeds were small and statistically no significant (P>0.05). The Brahma and Cochin cocks had significant (P0.05) among breeds (71.78% in Brahma, 71.84% in Cochin and 72.05% in Orpington). We recorded that sex had statistically significant (P<0.05) effect on some carcass characteristics - percentage of breast and abdominal fat in benefit of hens and percentage of things in benefit of cocks. The results from this study show that carcass yield cocks and hens of Brahma, Cochin and Orpington were higher in comparison with STN 46 64 15.
