Laparoscopic Abdominal Procedures in Children - Anaesthetic Implications
Abstract
Laparoscopy which was once confined to gynaecologists has now become a technique of choice for almost all abdominal surgeries and even demanded by majority of patients. Key-hole surgery has become the norm today. Endoscopic procedures help with visualization and manipulations of all organs including thoracoscopy, neuro and spine endoscopy. After the first diagnostic laparoscopy in 1910 by Hans Christian Jacobaeus, we have come a long way that there is hardly any contraindication for laparoscopic surgery. In 1999 Lobe et al. reported the first repair of oesophageal atresia entirely thoracoscopically, this was accomplished on a 2-3 kg neonate.
