This essay explores Italian reactions during the days of the 1956 Hungarian crisis, taking into account the historical-political context. The Italian government was led by Antonio Segni and supported by the Christian Democratic Party, Liberal Party, Republican Party, and Democratic Socialist Party. In any case, the presence of the biggest Western Communist Party and of a Socialist Party still in opposition to the government parties was seen as a great threat. That is why it is important to examine in detail the changes that the Hungarian uprising brought to the Italian party system, examining the government actions (both national and international) and the main activities and stances of the different political parties.
