An observational, descriptive and retrospective study was conducted with the aim of characterizing the results of the prenatal diagnosis of congenital malformations in pregnant women from the municipality of Ranchuelo, in 2007-2010. The sample was composed of the 27 pregnant women whose fetuses were diagnosed with congenital malformations. A questionnaire was made to collect information related to the sonographic findings detected on the prenatal ultrasound. The autopsy book in the Department of Pathology of the maternity hospital was reviewed, as well as the records of birth defects in the Provincial Center of Genetics. The results showed that 66.7% of pregnant women with fetuses with congenital abnormalities belonged to Ranchuelo health area. The central nervous system was the most affected one (55.6%). The age group from 19 to 34 years of age showed an increased number of malformations (62.2%) and in pregnant women between 21-24 weeks. There was complete coincidence between ultrasonographic diagnosis and autopsy findings in 76.5% of cases. Further research on congenital malformations in pregnancy is recommended.
