San Agustín, vencedor de herejes en el siglo xvi español
Abstract
This paper demonstrates that Saint Augustine was a very frequently quoted authority in the antiprotestant polemic in the Spanish 16th century. His texts were used to legitimate the persecution of Lutheran heresy, the Inquisition discourse, and antiprotestant treatises. Reasons are given to explain why this occurs despite the possible inconvenience that Saint Augustine’s testimony could carry, especially his opposition to the death penalty in the area of religious coercion.
