This article addresses the genesis, development, and suspension (or interruption, as time will tell) of reconciliation as a political imaginary, from the transition to democracy to the present. It also addresses the affinities and dissonances that the idea of reconciliation revealed and engendered among the various actors involved in the political transition to democracy. And, finally, it discusses the nuances and changes of meaning that reconciliation has undergone in recent decades, approaching the political imaginary of human rights, a seemingly antagonistic and competing concept.
