Methods: a narrative review of the available literature was carried out using the synthetic and historical-logical analytical methods, using articles retrieved from the SciELO and Scopus databases. A total of 20 references addressing the main clinical-epidemiological characteristics of the subject in question were selected. Results: gestational obesity is currently considered a public health problem due to its increasing incidence. Gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, eclampsia, cardiovascular problems share as elements that favor their genesis overweight and obesity, due to poor nutrition of the pregnant woman before, during and after pregnancy. Conclusions: pregnancy in overweight and obese women has an increasing incidence.
