The aim of this papers is the demographic analysis of European cities with more than 0,5 million inhabitants, including major Polish cities (Warsaw, Cracow, Lodz, Poznan, Wroclaw). The data were collected form Eurostat database and the Urban Audit Program for years 1991, 2001, and 2008. GUS database was the source of information concerning the Polish cities. Further discussion was initiated by an analysis of population dynamics, as well as an attempt of assessing the impact of population growth or decrease components on the changes in the population number. Then, the differences in the vital and migration statistics were explained by changes in the demographic structure of cities. The paper also includes an analysis of an ageing population process. As a summary, the multivariable analysis was conducted.
