Algérie 2012. Célébrer l’Indépendance sans les Algériens

Abstract

In 2012, the fiftieth anniversary of Algerian independence, Algerian national institutions invested heavily in organizing and promoting cultural and scientific events. Many of the actors complained of a cultural policy characterized by a certain hegemonic willfulness supported by a cash economy, a combination which both emasculates civil society and undermines freedom of expression in favor of a unique ideological discourse. Despite extensive civil society avoidance, one cannot deny that there exists a significant gap between Algerians and their national institutional culture.
