The objective was to evaluate the growth variables of lettuce seedlings produced in different alternative substrates, in total substitution to the commercial substrate. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with five substrates (T1 = commercial substrate, control, T2 = sand / straw / bovine manure, T3 = Sand / straw), at the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT), Nova Xavantina (T4 = commercial substrate / straw / bovine manure and T5 = Substrate / straw / humus) x two varieties of lettuce (Americana delícia and Regal of summer "lisa") totaling ten treatments with four replications. The commercial substrate provided higher growth of lettuce seedlings independent of the cultivar used. Alternatively, the use of the commercial substrate / straw / bovine manure for its low cost and easy availability can also be used, although its performance is inferior to the commercial substrate
