The second demographic transition is associated with diversification and reduction in household size. In the specific context of outer suburbs, second demographic transition’s forms are distinct from those characterizing urban areas. Indeed, low urbanity and high representation of couples with children traditionally characterize outer suburbs areas. This environment does not seem to match with expectations of small households, especially young singles, in search of urban amenities nearby. However, these small households continue to increase in the outer suburbs of Paris. But these developments are strongly related to territories’ degree of urbanity and households’ marital past.
