Ways and non-ways in search of the author's and the reader's places: an intertextual view of the play Pygmalion
Abstract
With a closer look at the play Pygmalion byBernard Shaw, this paper proposes an analysisof the concept of authorship and participationof the reader in the processes of resignificationof the work. On one hand, the author is nolonger the only entity in the attempt of findingan explanation for the work as the result of theinteraction of cultures and readings which makeup their development. On the other hand, thetext chosen as study object of this project showsthat texts involve openness to a variety of updatealternatives by the reader, not being, therefore, the exclusive owner of its meanings.
