The purpose of this article, a research product, is to contribute to understand current challenges to citizenship education and to develop new instruments that might help to face those challenges. The study presents and discusses two areas of study developed at the Max- Planck Institute for Human Development, in Berlin, and their contribution to the construction of citizenship. The first one deals with ecological rationality and the use of heuristics for decision making in an uncertain world. The other one studies the history of emotions, addressing topics such as honor, solidarity and empathy from a historical and cultural perspective.
