The city planet and the ecology of urban ecosystems

Abstract

The global and massive urbanization of territories is the most important ecological phenomenon nowadays. The standards of urban growth are crucial for the conservation of biological diversity, and also to the degree of quality of life of urban populations. Contrary to the perception of biologists and other academics, of cities as sterile environments and opposite to the nature, the recent development of urban ecology, a necessarily interdisciplinary science, shows that cities are heterotrophic ecosystems that need to be planned in a manner that their impacts on the biosphere is diminished, and that in parallel their ability to sustain biodiversity is increased.
