The author considers the characteristics of the wooden defensive structures (tyn (paling), and three towers) of the Umreva ostrog (wooden fortress, fort) of the first third of the XVIII century, based on the results of the archaeological studies. On the basis of this data, it was possible to trace the progressive development of this border defensive point over the course of thirty years. In the time of Peter the Great, the Umreva ostrog was a regular sub-rectangular fortification, enclosed by a paling wall, made of round logs, with a gate tower in the north. The shallow fosse of the ostrog had a subtrapezoidal profile, corresponding to the European fortification tradition. Such an initial design of the Umreva ostrog bears a certain resemblance to a field redoubt or gates of the “Zasechnaya cherta”. A few decades later, on the corners of the paling walls of the southern side of the Umreva ostrog, two corner towers were built on a pile-columnar foundation. One of the towers was sub-square in plan, while the other had a sub-rectangular outlines. The placement of these towers at the corners of the fortifications allowed the Umreva ostrog to acquire a bastion-type fortification.
