This article presents reflections about studies of real texts belonging to the genre Brazilian contemporary short stories in its sociological and aesthetic nature. To unveil the path of research, we analyzed the production process of literary texts, focusing on the short story. We assessed predominant aspects of the creative context, the thematic approach, the compositional construction, and style of this genre. Under a materialist and dialectics view, we believe that the discursive genre short story constitutes, according to Bakhtin, a historical and real activity of reading and writing; with relatively stable characteristics, it is linked to a typical state of social communication; with its thematic, stylistic, and compositional traits related to individual statements, linked to human activity. The literary aspects of this genre, under the perspective of Applied Linguistics and Dialogic Discourse Analysis, reveal the various movements in the dynamics of verbal interaction. Therefore, when we reflect on the contemporary Brazilian short story, we may measure the importance of its recognition for reading as construction of meanings. This is a theoretical research, with qualitative analysis of data generation, explanatory purposes and dialectical approach method.
