Northwest China is characterized by its high altitude and thin air. The small clearing between the bushings, the charged parts, the grounding bodies of the regulator step-up transformer, and the small safety margin may result in rain flashover. To this end, this paper analyzes the causes of flashover, studies the shortcomings of the bushing structure type, installation and other aspects, and proposes rain flashover protection measures such as optimizing bushing installation, installing auxiliary sheds, increasing the clearings between bushings and grounding bodies. Comsol Multiphysics, a finite element simulation software, is used to establish an electric field simulation model of transformer under raining conditions to study the rain flashover protection clearing between the bushing and the grounding body. The paper also proposes the corresponding optimization measures. The engineering verification shows that the proposed measures can significantly reduce the probability of rain flashover in the bushing and ensure the safe and stable operation of the synchronous condenser.
