Investigation of the metal complexes and bioactive compound formed by coordination of bioactive phytochemical from ginger (Zingiber officinale) extracts to metal ions

The Medicinal value of many plants is attributed to their bioactive compounds. The research is aimed to investigate the metal complexes and bioactive compounds formed from ginger extract. n-hexane, ethanol, and distilled water were used to generate crude extract from ginger leaves. Solubility of the ligand with the corresponding metal (Zn and Cu) complexes were measured. The Infra-red analysis of each extract was measured using FT-IR spectrometer. According to the findings, ginger extract was soluble in ethanol and distilled water but not n-hexane. The salts were not soluble in the ethanol, n-hexane and distilled water extract of ginger. In this investigation, significant phytochemicals were reported. Ginger contains phytochemicals like alkaloids, glycosides, anthraquinone glycosides, cardiac glycosides saponins, tannin, phenol, flavonoid, steroids, terpenoids, protein and carbohydrate. The ethanol extract contains amino and alcohol functional groups. The results of the study show that an increase in the functional groups' absorption peak in the metal complexes of ginger extracts indicates the occurrence of metal salts with varied donor sites in the plant extract. Hence, it may be concluded that ginger possesses bioactive compounds.
