Less than ten years after the revolutions of 2010 – 2011, a second revolutionary wave is crossing the South and East of the Mediterranean (Sudan, Algeria, Iraq and Lebanon). The starting point for the new popular protests seems to be the permanent mobilizations that have taken place in recent years. However, also as a consequence of the global mobilizations, the “environmental” aspect has generated renewed media and scholarly attention. While in most cases it is a matter of asking the question of the interest of protest movements in the reasons of ecology and climate change, much more serious approaches try to understand how much to what extent this factor has influenced – directly or not – the outbreak of the revolutionary movement. In my paper, I will start from this latter aspect to address some theoretical and conceptual questions concerning the relationship between history, subalternity, emancipation and ecology, through the case of revolutionary movements in the so-called “Arab world”.
