This article discusses the exile of the Revd. Gibert, a Huguenot pastor in the 18th century. Wanted by the French authorities, Gibert escaped to England in 1763 in order to petition the English Board of Trade and Plantations for protection and a grant of land in the American colonies for the production of silk and wine. With their support, he led a group of Huguenot refugees to inland South Carolina, founding the colony of New Bordeaux in 1764. This study concerns Gibert’s negotiations and preparations for exile in the colonies and the resources he used to achieve his goal.
