In Morocco, Islam is the state religion and Islamic education is part of the curriculum. At the same time, current educational reforms promote a competence-based approach and soft skills. This article highlights the existing tensions in curricula and teaching practices for Arabic, French and English in the national education system, between two conceptions of citizenship: one, focused on Arab-Muslim identity, seeks to construct pious and reverential citizens of the kingdom, while the other, resolutely pragmatic and liberal, endeavours to train autonomous, productive and competitive citizens in the global economy.
