The objective of the study was to evaluate the motivations of volunteers who participated in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and, therefore, to evaluate the motivations that led them to volunteer at an event of this magnitude. At the same time, it was sought to compare possible differences between those who did/do or not volunteer, taking into account this participation, whether or not they would participate again. This process was carried out through a questionnaire, inquiring sociodemographic data and specific characteristics of volunteering. We obtained a convenience sample of 25241 volunteers. Of this sample, 828 volunteers who participated in the last Olympic Games RIO16 responded. This study allowed us to articulate two critical points in the development of sports studies: the Olympic Games and the importance of volunteering in the organization of significant sporting events. It concluded that the motivations of the different respondents oscillated between the altruism of the aid in a mega event and the dazzle of participation in an event involving the biggest names in sport and a range of modalities impossible to contact in everyday situations.
