Dynamin-like proteins (DLPs) such as the mitofusins form homotypic and heterotypic oligomers that bridge and fuse opposing membranes. Here, Liu, Noel and Low present the crystal structure of a bacterial DLP heterotypic pair, providing insights into the mechanism behind long-range binding of opposing membranes.
