New fieldwork has been undertaken over the last ten years on the site of Ulug-Dépé, located in the piedmont of the Kopet-Dagh, Turkmenistan (Mission Archéologique Française Turkménistan). Due to its long occupation (5th-1st millennia BC), its stratigraphy which extends over almost thirty metres and its sequence of architectural remains, this is one of the major sites for sedentary farming communities in southern Turkmenistan, from the Chalcolithic to the Iron Age. This article examines the ceramic technology of each occupation phase,on the basis of previously unpublished material. The reconstruction of chaînes opératoires reveals the manner in which wheel fashioning was introduced, as well as refining chronology and providing further knowledge on these communities.
