The relationship between language and economics is of interest to only a minority of researchers, even though it offers stimulating research perspectives. This article presents two of them, which seem to be worthy of in-depth treatment: the relationship between language and social position, on the one hand, and between monolingualism and capitalism, on the other. It appears that economic theories can hardly be transposed as the only tools for analysing the field of language. It is the intersection of different angles of approach that seems to be the most likely to give an account of the reality of the various phenomena affecting both the economic and sociolinguistic fields.
