The socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors affecting digital gaming addiction among Generation Z
Abstract
This study aims to identify socioeconomic factors affecting digital gaming addiction among generation zero in Turkey. Using the data of 907 children under 18 years of age, we performed multivariate linear regressions in a hierarchical design to reveal the socioeconomic determinants of digital gaming addiction in Turkey. In particular, we investigated the effects of the characteristics of children, parents, and the family. Accordingly, the characteristics of the children such as age, gender, educational level, the number of digital gaming platforms they use, and being active in a social manner, remarkably affect their digital gaming addiction. In addition, the characteristics of the parents, such as the level of education, occupational status, and digital gaming behavior of the mothers, have essential effects on the digital gaming addiction of their children. Finally, the characteristics of the family as a whole, including household income, the total number of children in the family, and having a playing area around their house, also have significant impacts on digital gaming addiction among Generation Z.
