Key Points S. mutans is regarded as the most notorious cariogenic pathogen in human oral microbiome. mltG gene acts as terminase and endolytically controls the PG strand elongation in bacteria. Compromised virulence potential of ΔmltG w.r.t. wild type also validated through in-vivo study.
