This paper analyzes the composition and style of the nautical metaphors of the odes «Vida retirada», «Al apartamiento» and «A nuestra Señora» by fray Luis de León, in order to study the poetic prowess with which he builds them. The analysis is complemented by an observation of the philological criteria with which the author studies the biblical texts, especially in In Cantica Canticorum Salomonis explanatio, where he shows his mastery of rhetoric and poetic questions and exalts the evidentia as a main form of style in poetry. The paper proposes that the evidentia is the expressive guideline of the marine scenes of fray Luis and that it reaches quite developed compositional principles and stylistic forms. It also asks about the special interest of Fray Luis in navigation metaphors.
