The evolution of cropping systems in the Lake Alaotra region of Madagascar. An approach based on temporalities. Lake Alaotra, the rice barn of Madagascar, is a region with high immigration and long term official development assistance. The history of agricultural development in the region displays various temporalities. In examining this issue, the authors propose an analytical framework that puts into perspective firstly, the instability of agricultural policies, secondly, the limited timeframe given to research and development projects supporting technical change, and thirdly, the generally irregular progression of the adoption of technical proposals, of innovation and ultimately of the evolution of agricultural practices. In spite of disconnected temporalities, a reserve of knowledge and various skills has being built up, which provides farmers with the ability to adapt to various types of risk.
