Professional development program on social determinants of health in primary care

Background: prioritizing the social determinants of health in primary care is a need, due to the changes that occur in society. Objective: to describe the program of a professional development course on social determinants of health for Comprehensive Medicine resident doctors. Methods: the multilateral analysis of the defined professional functions which must shape the performance was carried out. According to a gradual derivation process, the system of pedagogical objectives and content was obtained. The course program was developed with the class as a main organizational form. Results: the course "Social determinants of health in primary care" is proposed, with a total of 56 hours and five topics. From that total, 26 teaching hours were organized into lectures (14 hours), practical classes (6 hours) workshops (6 hours) and 30 hours for independent tasks of information search in the community. A final evaluation included a course work presentation. Methodological guidelines are proposed. The program delves into current issues with little systematization in the career, such as inequalities and inequities in health and health promotion with a salutogenic approach focused on factors that foster health and well-being. The integral approach of medicine is regarded as the center of formation by establishing the community-family-individual relationship. Conclusions: the course program on social determinants of health, that can be taught to family doctors, is described.
