Applications of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems in libraries: A proposed model for participation in an office consortium project to implement RFID systems in Egyptian libraries.
Abstract
A research paper presented to the Fifteenth National Conference for Library and Information Specialists in Egypt dealt with three main sections. The first section deals with the definition of RFID systems, their components, how they work, and their applications in the field of libraries, in addition to exposing the most important reasons for the slow spread and application of RFID systems in Egyptian libraries. The second section discusses the role of cooperative projects in applying RFID systems in libraries, in addition to presenting examples of some international cooperative projects in this regard. The third section presents a proposed model for Egyptian libraries to participate in a consortium based on participation and cooperation among Egyptian libraries to implement RFID systems with the aim of eliminating the problems of lack of library budgets in the face of the high cost of implementing these systems, as is the case in many Western libraries.
