Globalism, especially after 1980’s, has caused variations in the structure and usage of employment. Labor demand characterisitcs have changed, i.e. unskilled labor has been replaced by highly knowledgeable, educated labor due to the adaptation of new technologies. The variations in labor structure have been further spurred by the variations in working conditions. The decline of industry employment, the increase of service sector employment in which the qualified workforce show less interest in unions and the new working models (e.g. flexible/partial time employment) aggravated the problem of effective organizations of unions. In addition, privatization and subcontractor applications have been bringing about concretionary pressure on organizational latitude of unions. Governments departing from the role of being an employer have pushed the developing unionism in this sector to the edge of existence. All the variations had made it necessary a fundamental change in Turkey’s union structures, Union formations of the past are incompetent to solve the organizational problems of today’s union. In order to function as modern non-profit civil society organization, unions have to embrace the above mentioned radical changes.
