Literature as a source for the history of school Geography in Brazil
Abstract
As a contribution to historical knowledge of the Brazilian School Geography in the period prior to the institutionalization of geographical science in Brazil (the years 1810-1930), this study aimed to analyze discourses on the geographic knowledge taught, distinct from the knowledge to be taught and know seized. Therefore, we used sources of Brazilian literature, such as novels and memoirs, which cut out various discursive fragments from different times and in which mention experiences and practices of teaching geography. The work showed how it was taught and learned geography, the perception of this teaching and what the meanings of this discipline to the subject over the defined period.
