Symposium 5: HbA1c: Infection management

Abstract

Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) are associated with different morbidities, requiring frequent medical visits, daily wound care, antimicrobial therapy, surgery or other procedures, with high health care costs. The predisposing factors are: neuropathy, vasculopathy, immunopathies and biomechanics of the foot. About 20% of mild IPDs and up to 60% of severe cases are associated with bone involvement. The International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) developed a system to classify diabetic foot wounds using the acronym PEDIS: perfusion, extent, depth, infection, and sensation (neuropathy) to assess the severity of infection.
