Abstract Patient education encompasses more than just telling a patient to read materials; it is a process of working with a patient to promote behavioral change. This layered patient analysis tool was developed to assist medical students in understanding their patients on the receiving end of patient education. Attendees will explore how to conduct a layered patient analysis that can assist them with the delivery of patient education materials. This activity will be of interest to faculty who are looking for different ways to teach physician-patient communication and how to educate patient populations. The patient analysis tool was presented to students as they participated in a class activity that required them to take a more detailed look at a particular patient population. Students were debriefed afterwards to discuss how gathering additional information helped them in how they would deliver patient education to the particular patient population that they were presented with. These training materials have been adapted from a layered analysis tool that was developed to assist instructional designers and educators with how to develop a better understanding of their learning audience.
