3D augmented reality for esthetic rehabilitation: A case report

Introduction: Esthetic rehabilitation is a complex process that requires accurate planning and execution to achieve satisfactory results. Three-dimensional augmented reality (3D-AR) is a novel technology that can aid in the dynamic visualization and planning of dental restorations. Case Description: A 50-year-old woman patient presented with multiple missing teeth in the maxillary esthetic zone and a desire to improve the esthetic appearance of her smile. A digital impression was taken, and the prostheses were designed with computer-aided design (CAD) software and then virtually trialed using a dynamic visualization method. The 3D-AR application was used for real-time tracking and projection of the CAD prostheses in a patient's esthetic zone. The final restorations were fabricated using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology and were cemented using an adhesive technique. Discussion: This study is the first clinical report that illustrated the use of the 3D-AR smile design approach for esthetic prosthetic treatment. The 3D-AR approach overcomes the limitations of the 2D visualization methods as the 3D design of the prostheses could be directly transferred to CAD software. Therefore, the patient's approved planned prosthesis could be precisely fabricated. Another advantage of this approach is that the 3D-AR application is compatible with smart portable devices, thus, it can be used in all general dental clinics without the need for additional expensive face scan devices or photographic equipment. Conclusion/Clinical Significance: 3D-AR technology can be a valuable tool in the planning and execution of esthetic rehabilitation procedures. It allows for accurate visualization and communication between the patient and the clinician, which can improve treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.
