Abstract

At the end of the Fourteenth century, Queen’s treasury in the Crown of Aragon suffered from a heavy debt that made virtually impossible any ordinary payment. As a result, it was necessary to appoint a new treasurer to establish strong expenditure control. In this article, we will analyze the mecanisms and strategies established to solve the queen’s financial problems, through the transcription and edition of the exceptional memorial signed in 1393 by Queen Violante de Bar with her new treasurer, Berenguer de Cortilles, one of her biggest creditors.
