The problem of relationship of texts in the Menaia of hieromonk German Tulupov and Ioann Miliutin

Abstract

This article continues the series of works dealing with the manuscript tradition of the Life of Alexander Svirsky and establishes the relationship between the texts in the Menaia of German Tulupov and Ioann Miliutin. It also identifi es textual and compositional diff erences, which make it possible to state that Ioann Miliutin and his sons did not use the text of the Life of St. Alexander from the Menaia of the predecessors. To the delight of the textual critic, both the Menaion of German Tulupov and the Menaion of Macarius contain a number of vivid erroneous readings, often copied by scribes, unless another manuscript copy was used for verifi cation. None of them are found in the Life of Miliutin’s Menaion. However, other distorted readings in this Menaion, an archaic array of miracles and, in particular, the text of the First Prologue edition together with quite well-studied manuscript tradition of the Life of St. Alexander point to a possible source of the text with a similar set of features. Ioann Miliutin, with high probability, used the library of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, choosing the manuscript f. 304.I № 629, written no later than the third quarter of the 16th century. Together with the Life of St. Alexander, the text of the First Prologue edition of the Life was borrowed from this manuscript. In addition, the narrative is supplemented with a short message about the uncovering of the saint’s relics, which is one of the earliest testimonies.
