Influence of seasonal factors on the incidence of ruptured intracranial aneurysms: Moroccan fifteen years’ experience

Principles: The incidence of ruptured aneurysm in morocco is high. Many studies have been done to find the correlation between ruptured aneurysms and the climatic variables. Such work has not yet been experimented in Morocco. The aim of this study is to find if there is an influence of secular trends (season and months) with the incidence of ruptured intracranial aneurysms in Morocco. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from the medical reports of patients with intracranial ruptured aneurysms in a single center between January 2005 to September 2020. Results: There were 758 ruptured aneurysms (386 female, 372 male) of intracranial hemorrhage cases from 2005-2020. In our study, the seasonal peak was spring with 28.5 % followed by winter with 27.3% of cases. The nadir was in summer in 21.7% of cases, autumn represent 22.5% of cases. According to the months, the incidence of ruptured intracranial aneurysms was high in March and November with the peak of 10.4% while the lowest incidence was observed in September with 5.3% of cases. Conclusions: Our study reveals that in Morocco, the high incidence of aneurysms occurs in spring, while the nadir of bleeding was in summer for all intracranial hemorrhages. This could be explained by the drop in temperature and the favorable climate allowing the increase in blood pressure.
