The electromagnetic design of a six-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for application in medium/high-speed wind energy conversion systems (WECS) is studied in this work. The dynamic model and the analytical design process of the six-phase PMSG are presented and some design aspects, such as the winding configuration and the geometry of the permanent magnets are discussed in order to improve the performance of the generator in both healthy and fault-tolerant conditions, i.e. when only one set of three-phase windings is connected to the grid. Finally, several simulation results obtained through finite element analysis are presented in order to validate the proposed design.
