Colombian Medical Education System: A Hundred Years Behind
Abstract
Almost one hundred years ago the CarnegieFoundation for the Advancement of Teachingauthorized a study and report about the medicaleducation of the United States and Canadadirected by Mr. Abraham Flexner an educationexpert of the time. This report turned out to beone of the most important documents of themedical education revolution that took place bythat time in North America and that led it tobecome what it is today.Almost a century after that, Colombianmedical education has reached an outstandingsimilarity to the system described in the Flexnerreport. The present article highlights the parallelbetween North America’s medical education situationa hundred years ago and Colombia’sactual medical education situation. We present here some notions about the actualeducation system based on what wasdescribed on 1910 and which we consider, constitutes the current medical education situation on our country and possibly on manyLatin American countries.
