Aim. The article is dedicated to the anniversary of two great Russian writers of the second half of the twentieth century: I. Bunin and A. Tvardovsky, who never met in their lives, but highly valued each other's poetic gift. Methodology. The author points out the variety of memories about the characters of Bunin and Tvardovsky, emphasizes the uniqueness and cultural and historical value of Bunin's epistolary and workbooks ("Novomir diary") Tvardovsky. Results. The proposed analysis testifies, first, to the thoroughness and certainty of the layers of the article by Tvardovsky, and second, to the obvious similarity of the views of A. Tvardovsky and I. Bunin on key issues of literature, attitude to the writing craft. According to the author, Tvardovsky's "Novomir diary" reflects both key moments in the country's life and reveals the thoroughness of the choice of positions from which he explores Bunin's work. Research implications. The conclusion is made about the expediency of teaching the skill of a critic on the material of diary entries and the final version of the published article by Tvardovsky and the reflection of Bunin's literary views in a private letter.
