Los pueblos makú y las misiones católicas en la frontera de Colombia y Brasil, 1900-1990

Abstract

In the northwest of the Amazonas the people of nomad tradition or Makú, that live in the interfluves of the region, have kept a greater autonomy; however, they did not escape the action of catholic missionaries since the second half of the 19th century. This article addresses the jobs, impacts and representations of the catholic missions on the Makú natives of Colombia and Brasil. The analysis reveals that despite the different origin of the religious congregations, the civilizing proposals and representations have been similar in both countries, though mostly with negative effects.
