The article reveals and analyses socially marked lexis from one of Hemingway’s stories. The author’s research is based on the methods of discourse analysis and comparative analysis as well as on the principles of world perception developed by R. Barthes, poststructuralist. The analysis if socially marked lexis showed that in Hemingway’s works (who belonged to the group of ‘lost generation’ writers) the description of overcoming and destructing social norms and values typical of bourgeois society prevails. Besides, they are substituted by the values of a new society where a personality is the most important. The research results make it possible to form new and important directions of studying modern texts, which will make results of the analysis more valid.
