RECREATION AND CONFLICT IN IMPERIAL BRAZIL: The case of the War of the Mounds

The main purpose of this article is to analyze the episode known as Guerra dos Marimbondos, a rebellion against obligatory civil registration of births and deaths in the Brazilian empire, considering the negotiation processes on the construction of imperial state. We argue that the rebellion must be analyzed as a political expression that shows some conflicting belongings in relation to the hegemonic political project. The text presents the episode - particularly in Pernambuco - and remarks the government efforts to delegitimize the mouvement, discussing Guerra dos Marimbondos' expressiveness and its political and social meanings.
