Sulfated polysaccharides from the edible marine algae Padina tetrastromatica protects heart by ameliorating hyperlipidemia, endothelial dysfunction and inflammation in isoproterenol induced experimental myocardial infarction

The global concern of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) has been increased, as it was declared as the top cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The edible marine algae are now considered as an important functional food ingredient or nutraceuticals as it contains many bioactive molecules. In the present study, cardioprotective properties of the sulfated polysaccharides from the edible marine algae, Padina tetrastromatica (PSPS) has been evaluated in isoproterenol (ISO) induced myocardial infarction in rat model. ISO-induced oxidative damage, hyperlipidemia, endothelial dysfunction and inflammatory reactions were normalized by the administration of PSPS (50 mg/kg BW) through beneficially modulating the signalling pathways involved in the pathophysiological conditions. The overall effect of PSPS was comparable to the reference drug, aspirin. The study results revealed the multifactorial effect of PSPS in ameliorating the cardiovascular complications through its hypolipidemic and anti-inflammatory activities.
