Anti-atherosclerotic effect of sea buckthorn(Hippophae rhamnoides Linn)and its molecular mechanism
Abstract
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides Linn) is a plant with both medicinal and nutritional value. It is rich in nutrients and biologically active components, including a variety of flavonoids, vitamins, fatty acids, organic acids, minerals and so on. In this review, the anti-atherosclerosis effects and molecular mechanisms of sea buckthorn extracts and their preparations are summarized. There is evidence that sea buckthorn may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidation, blood lipid-regulating, anti-platelet aggregation, resisting cell apoptosis, alleviating mitochondrial damage, and inhibiting the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells both in vivo and in vitro. In clinical studies, sea buckthorn has been shown to regulate blood pressure, blood lipids and blood sugar levels, reduce metabolic diseases such as obesity, thereby reducing risk factors for atherosclerosis. In summary, these studies indicate that sea buckthorn is rich in bioactive substances and can exert anti-atherosclerotic effects through various mechanisms.
