Hair Growth-Promoting effect of the coffee bean residue extract on hair follicle dermal papilla cells via the activation of autophagy

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the coffee bean residue extract (ECBR) in promoting hair growth in human hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs). Increased viability was observed in ECBR-treated cells that was almost equivalent to that in the cells treated with minoxidil, a positive control. Moreover, significant increase in ATP production, related to cell proliferation, was observed in ECBR-treated cells, suggesting its hair growth-promoting effect. Further analysis of the mechanisms underlying the hair growth-promoting effects of ECBR using microarrays revealed a significant increase in various autophagy-related biological processes in HFDPCs. Additionally, ECBR significantly increased the expression levels of the autophagy-associated factors, vascular endothelial growth factor A, and autophagy-related (ATG)-2, ATG5, ATG12, ATG14, and ATG16L1, in HFDPCs by real-time PCR. Our findings revealed that ECBR promoted the proliferation of HFDPCs via the activation of autophagy, suggesting its potential for the treatment of hair growth disorders and hair loss.
